
Cornered, 2018/2019
Series of analog photographs, spatial installation,
35mm color film
A series of analog photographs that represent devastated and abandoned industrial, creative spaces while the motif of “corner” is repeated from photograph to photograph. Visiting these spaces with people who have spent a large part of their working life there, I realized that these are spaces “marked” by the intimacy, energy of those people, who react very emotionally when they are faced with them. On the other hand, these same individuals were once “cornered” and had to go through an almost forced departure from the space in the midst of a catastrophe that, without further ado, deaden the city, the region, the state. Guided by the expression that “everyone has their own corner of peace”, I realized that these people were left without part of themselves (without their own corner), which they built almost their entire working life and that part of their lives was torn out, while today they are pushed out of their own memory. Today, the photographed corners are empty, as are the entire factory buildings, while from their own point of view, energy and life is still present. A plant that grows out of dead concrete or shadows that move over time begins to dominate the space and give new vitality and communication that is uninterrupted. Whether this series of works is a depiction of past times or a realistic depiction and reflection of the present is a question I seek to answer with this artwork. Today’s situation, in contrast to the above, is very quiet and in a subtle way devastates spaces, separates people, emotions, contacts, and I wonder if we are again cornered under the motto of the “new normal” ?!
Some of the photographs are displayed on the wall of the gallery, some leaning against the wall, some covered with white cloth or facing the wall in order not to be easily accessible to the eye. With the installation, I suggest the very position of the artist’s uncertainty and artistic activity at a time when the “virus” has become an existential threat to this group.

Serija analognih fotografija koje predstavljaju devastirane i napuštene industrijske, stvaralačke prostore dok se motiv „kuta“ ponavlja iz fotografije u fotografiju. Obilazeći navedene prostore s osobama koje su tamo provele velik dio radnog vijeka uvidio sam da su to prostori “obilježeni” intimom, energijom navedenih ljudi, koji vrlo emotivno reagiraju prilikom suočavanja s istima. S druge strane, ti iste pojedinci svojevremeno su bili “stjerani u kut” te su morali proći gotovo prisilni odlazak iz prostora usred propasti koja je, bez daljnjega, poprilično kancerogeno umrtvila grad, regiju, državu. Vodeći se izrazom da “svatko ima svoj kutak mira” shvatio sam da su te osobe ostale bez svojeg ja (bez svog kutka) kojeg su gradile gotovo cijeli radni vijek te da im je dio života istrgnut, dok ga danas potiskuju iz vlastite memorije. Danas su fotografirani kutevi prazni, kao i čitava tvornička zdanja, dok s vlastite točke gledišta, energija i život je još uvijek prisutan. Biljka koja raste iz mrtvila betona ili sjene koje se kreću s protokom vremena počinju dominirati prostorom te daju novu životnost i komunikaciju koja je neprekidna. Je li ova serija radova prikaz prošlih vremena ili realni prikaz i odraz današnjice pitanje je na koje si nastojim odgovoriti ovim radom. Današnja situacija, nasuprot gorenavedenoj, jest vrlo tiha te na suptilan način pustoši prostore, razdvaja ljude, emocije, kontakte, te se pitam jesmo li opet stjerani u kut pod motom “novog normalnog”?!
Dio fotografija izložen je na zidu galerije, dio naslonjen na zid, dio prekriven bijelom tkaninom ili pak okrenut prema zidu s ciljem da nije lako oku dostupan. Postavom sugeriram i samu poziciju neizvjesnosti umjetnika i umjetničkog djelovanja u vremenu u kojemu je “virus” postao egzistencijalna ugroza navedenoj skupini.
